The WIP – Doctor Stream aims to encourage medical practitioners to practise in regional, rural and remote communities and to promote careers in rural medicine through the provision of financial incentives. Maximum annual incentives available are listed in the table below by Modified Monash (MM) classification and Year level. Year level corresponds to the duration of active service taken to qualify for successive payments within the program which may not be in 12 month increments.

There are two payment systems used for the WIP – Doctor Stream: the Central Payment System (CPS) and the Flexible Payment System (FPS).
Central Payment System
Medical practitioners who bill the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) for eligible services receive automated payments made by the Department of Human Services (Human Services) through the CPS. Medical practitioners are not required to submit an application to access payments through the CPS, they are only required to provide bank details to Human Services. After completion of the required number of active quarters for an initial payment, Human Services will write to the medical practitioner advising that they are eligible for a payment. Medical practitioners must provide bank details within 60 calendar days of the date of that letter.
Flexible Payment System
Medical practitioners need to apply under the FPS if they provide eligible non-MBS services and/or undertake training (under approved training pathways) that is not reflected in MBS records. For more information about applying under the FPS, visit the Department's website.
Please note: The WIP may be subject to change by Government and it is the responsibility of eligible medical practitioners to ensure they are operating under the current version of the WIP Guidelines. Any claim for loss of payment or any other loss as a result of a medical practitioner failing to operate under the current version of the WIP Guidelines will not be considered.
Health Care Homes
From 1 October 2017, practice locations across Australia commenced participation in the Health Care Homes program.
