The treatments in this booklet are for people who are dependent on ‘opioids’ - usually this will be heroin, but also includes drugs like morphine, pethidine, codeine, and non-prescribed methadone.

Over the past few years, some new ways to treat opioid dependence have been studied. A project known as ‘NEPOD’ or the National Evaluation of Pharmacotherapies for Opioid Dependence brought together the results of many of these studies. Some of the findings of this project have been included in this booklet.

The aim of this booklet is:

to tell you about the treatment options available for heroin and other opioid dependence, and
to help you make informed decisions about your treatment.
