Intergovernmental Committee on Drugs - Meeting Communique, 9 and 10 August 2011
The Intergovernmental Committee on Drugs (IGCD) held its first Annual Stakeholder Forum under the National Drug Strategy 2010 – 2015 in Melbourne on 9 August 2011 and the annual IGCD Strategic Workshop on 9 and 10 August 2011.
Annual Stakeholder Forum
Stakeholders from the drug and alcohol sector including service providers, local government, law enforcement, peak bodies and research organisations were invited to attend the IGCD Annual Stakeholder Forum to discuss issues, priorities and actions for the implementation of the National Drug Strategy 2010 – 2015. Attendees contributed to group discussion on policy and priority areas including: alcohol; tobacco; treatment and reducing the harms associated with drug and alcohol misuse; and emerging issues in illicit drug use. Key themes emerging from the Forum included the importance of ongoing and appropriate stakeholder communication and engagement, strengthening the focus on consumer outcomes and social inclusion, and enhancing data collection to build a stronger evidence base.IGCD Strategic Workshop
IGCD members participated in a one and a half day planning workshop to guide implementation of the National Drug Strategy 2010 – 2015 and the preparation of the IGCD work plan for the next 5 years. The IGCD commenced planning for development of national sub-strategies relating to: Tobacco; Alcohol; Pharmaceutical Drug Misuse; Illicit Drugs; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Drug Strategy; Research and Data; and Workforce Development. Stakeholder views expressed at the Stakeholder Forum informed discussions at the workshop. The advice from the workshop will be used to inform the more detailed work of Standing Committees and Working Groups which are developing specific strategies and sub-strategies.The IGCD agreed on the following mission statement to further align the IGCD’s continuing efforts to achieve the objectives and actions of the National Drug Strategy:
Build safe and healthy communities by reducing alcohol, tobacco and other drug-related health, social and economic harms.
The IGCD then agreed on the following objectives:
1. Develop, implement and monitor the National Drug Strategy
2. Provide evidence-informed advice to relevant Ministers
3. Identify and respond to emerging issues
