The National Police Drug and Alcohol Coordinating Committee was derived from the former National Police Drug Education Committee.

Background

The National Police Drug and Alcohol Coordinating Committee (NPDACC) was preceded by the former National Police Drug Educators Committee (NPDEC) which was established in July 1993 to provide a focus for the development of educational strategies to support the National Drug Strategy in minimising the harmful effects of drugs and their use in Australian society.

Over time the role of State Police Community Drug Education Officers expanded and Police Drug and Alcohol Coordinators took over as the Committee's work encompassed more complex drug and alcohol issues and related policy development. Subsequently in 1995 the Committee's brief was extended to reflect its expanded role, the membership was expanded to include a research/evaluation person with a health background and the Committee's name was changed to the National Police Drug and Alcohol Coordinating Committee (NPDACC).
